Spain’s newest e-invoicing requirement is coming up. Now is the time to prepare your business for the 2026 obligation – failure to become compliant in time can result in fines of over €50,000.
Integrating any new e-invoicing system can be intimidating, especially when there’s a looming deadline. We’re here to break down what you need to know about Spain’s soon-to-be-mandatory VeriFactu system and the simplest way to prepare.
In this article, we’ll discuss the basics of VeriFactu, compliance requirements, and how Storecove can help your business integrate with the system.
Let’s dive in.
What is VeriFactu?
VeriFactu is a new e-invoicing platform developed by the Spanish Tax Authority (AEAT). Companies will be required to send invoice data through the platform for AEAT to validate in near real time, reducing fraud by adding transparency to business transactions.
VeriFactu might cause large changes for companies who still rely on paper invoices, but it will vastly improve administrative processes related to the invoicing process. Invoice integrity will be instantly verified, helping to speed up payment and eliminate a method of fraud. Additionally, it will simplify billing and accounting processes by giving businesses a way to instantly submit records directly to AEAT.

Spain’s E-invoicing Requirement
VeriFactu will soon be mandatory for most businesses in Spain. It will have the largest impact on companies conducting B2B transactions – B2G e-invoicing has been required in Spain since 2014.
VeriFactu Scope
The VeriFactu mandate primarily applies to entities issuing invoices subject to Spanish VAT. Foreign companies with a tax presence in Spain issuing invoices under Spanish rules must also comply.
However, even if this does not apply to your business, it’s still worth learning about VeriFactu – the Spanish tax authority hopes to eventually require most transactions in Spain to use the system.

Implementation Timeline
Companies of all sizes are expected to comply, although the requirement will take effect in stages based on company size and type.
January 2026: Corporate Income Tax taxpayers are required to adopt VeriFactu.
July 2026: All other taxpayers must comply, including freelancers.
Eventually, it is expected that the VeriFactu obligation will be expanded to cover almost all Spanish B2B and B2C transactions.
Compliance Requirements and Penalties
AEAT requires invoices to be sent in a structured electronic file based on the tax authority’s specifications. Businesses must send these structured e-invoices through a Verifiable Invoice Issuing System for AEAT to validate.
Additionally, companies must retain e-invoices for at least 4 years. Retention and traceability are core priorities of Spain’s e-invoicing requirement.
It is critical that businesses ensure their invoicing processes, formats, and tech infrastructure are ready ahead of the deadline. Noncompliance can lead to fines over €50,000.
